In July of 2013, almost 200 people attended a grand opening to celebrate the opening of a new co-op housing development in Brandon providing quality and accessible accommodation for low-to-moderate income seniors in Brandon.
The project consisted of 34 one and two bedroom units and was funded by all three levels of government. The City of Brandon contributed to the project in the form of capital funding and land donation. The city also provided the co-op with a grant offsetting taxes for 20 years.
This co-op is the first housing co-op to be built in Manitoba using what’s known as an unequal share equity model – members have different share requirements based on what size of suite they’re going into.
